Is a Yoga Teacher Training Right for Me?

If you've been practicing yoga for a while, chances are the thought has crossed your mind at some point: should I do a teacher training?

Maybe someone suggested it. Maybe you found yourself curious about the mechanics behind a pose. Maybe you simply want to go deeper than a regular group class allows. Whatever brought you here, this article will help you figure out whether a 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training is the right next step — and specifically, whether AYM's program is the right fit for you.

You don't have to want to become a teacher

This surprises a lot of people. The majority of people who enroll in yoga teacher trainings are not doing it purely to start a teaching career. Many come because they want to understand their practice on a deeper level — the anatomy behind a forward fold, the philosophy behind the breath, the sequencing logic that makes a class feel like it builds toward something.

At AYM, our program is explicitly designed for both: those who want to teach, and those who simply want to go further. You'll leave with a Yoga Alliance certification regardless of which camp you're in but the experience of deepening your own practice is valuable in its own right.

"This program is for curious and dedicated yoga practitioners of all body types, ages, and backgrounds — whether you aspire to teach or simply want to deepen your personal practice." — AYM Teacher Training

What level of experience do you need?

You don't need to be an advanced practitioner. What matters more than flexibility or how many years you've been on a mat is genuine commitment to a regular practice and a willingness to question what you think you know about yoga.

AYM recommends at least two years of consistent asana practice and some experience with meditation or self-inquiry. If you're newer to yoga, that doesn't automatically disqualify you, reach out to the program director to have a conversation about whether the timing is right.

What if you've never considered teaching?

Some of the most engaged participants in teacher training programs are people who had no intention of teaching when they signed up. The process of learning how to teach yoga, how to break down a pose, how to read a room, how to sequence for safety changes how you experience your own practice in ways that are hard to anticipate.

If you work in movement, healthcare, sports, education, or any field that involves helping others, the skills you build in a teacher training have value well beyond a yoga studio.

Signs this program might be right for you

You practice regularly and find yourself wanting more than a group class provides.

You're curious about the anatomy, philosophy, or methodology behind yoga.

You're considering a teaching career and want a thorough, Yoga Alliance certified foundation.

You want to teach safely — not just confidently, but with the knowledge to protect your students.

You're a teacher in another field looking to integrate yoga into your work.

You're a current yoga teacher wanting to revisit the fundamentals through a fresh lens.

What if you're not sure?

That's exactly what we're here for. AYM offers 1:1 information session with Jeanne Mudie, you can ask her any questions before committing. No pressure, no obligation — just an honest conversation about whether the program is a good fit for where you are right now.

The program runs September 2026 to March 2027, across seven weekends and eight workshops, and is available both in-studio in downtown Montreal and online via Zoom.
